… that just. ain’t. true.
Valley News cops and courts reporter Jordan Cuddemi was surprised to see freelancer Katy Savage post the link in the Upper Valley VT/NH Facebook page with the comment, “This is heartbreaking.”
Turns out, it’s just a page that appears to be a copy of the Woodstock police log, including the following two entries for Sunday, July 30:
At 6:11 p.m. a woman called to say her child’s stepmother had just been murdered and the whereabouts of the father were unknown.
At 10 p.m. police responded to the same home as above to provide protective detail due to a threat from the woman’s ex who is wanted in connection with a Mississippi homicide.
So … what exactly is heartbreaking? Based on those two entries into the log, does anybody know? The comments on Facebook are along the lines of: “????“
So Jordan picked up the phone and talked to the cops. Here’s the deal. Woodstock Sgt. Joe Swanson said there was a homicide in Mississippi. There was a connection between the suspect and a Woodstock resident, which Swanson declined to describe. The Woodstock resident was worried because the suspect was on the run and his whereabouts were unknown, so Woodstock police staged the residence as a precaution.
One day later, on Monday, the suspect killed himself in Colorado, officials said. Here’s the Durango Herald report on that incident.
I’ve reached out to Savage via Facebook and her Subtext email address (Subtext is the company that runs dailyUV) to see why she chose that headline, but haven’t heard back yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
UPDATE: Savage wrote back at 1:25 this afternoon to say the headline has been changed:
- Seven Days: DailyUV Aims to Reboot News Coverage in the Upper Valley
- Huffington Post: The Problem With Identifying An Alleged Rapist As An ‘Honor Roll Student’ (note that, contrary to the description at the top of the HuffPo article, the post in question has been put back up)
This is heartbreaking. This is heartbreaking. This is heartbreaking.
