A Valley News Publication

Olivia Lapierre, at right, who has graced these digital pages before, is currently using her Instagram to showcase people of color in climate activism movements (her four most recent ‘grams at the bottom of this post). Olivia was interviewed by local zero-waste activist and YouTuber Samantha White, at left, and ~ta-da~ you can watch it below. It’s a super breezy seven minutes and it involves Muriel’s Donuts and some pretty good outtakes, so take a look.

And, as promised, the four most recent representation posts (out of nearly 20) @zerowastehabesha:

Representation Matters in Sustainability: @zerowastechica 🇲🇽 I am Heidi Violet – born in Mexico, raised in Silicon Valley and currently residing in Hollister, CA. Business development manager for a company that specializes in corporate tourism for Silicon Valley and is currently focused on AgTech, rehab for wildlife, and bringing an emphasis on our county’s sustainable crop methods such as solar powered farms and hydroponics. I moved to Hollister to start a little homestead and grow the zero waste community. The planet and our health is a universal issue – however it gets portrayed as a luxury concern of the privileged. Demonstrating that individuals from every walk of life are standing up and saying No More to plastic garbage being marketed to us for consumption will relay the message that it matters on a global human scale. Seeing a familiar face, a face like yours, in the zero waste movement gives a connection between cultures. •Having representation in environmental spaces breathes inclusivity to a problem being muffled as a marginal trouble. But this is whole Earth big, and so, the whole Earth should be involved. As an immigrant, my family struggled at the start of their journey in the states. Like so many others, we had to find creative ways to save money. What most people, especially those with similar beginnings, don’t understand yet – is that striving for zero waste doesn’t have to be expensive. What I hope to portray and shed light on is different ways to go about the same result. It doesn’t have to consume your funds or your time. Those are the two biggest complaints I hear – “I don’t have time” and “I don’t have money” – well me either ya’ll! However our ancestors did it before 1907, so let’s figure this out together 🤓 #representationmatters #sustainable #woc #bipoc #mexican #siliconvalley #zerowaste #lowwaste #notrash #plasticfree #trashfree #bezero #makelesstrash #unpackaged #circulareconomy

Representation Matters in Sustainability: @sueyeekhor 🇲🇾 Sue Yee, co founder of Zero Waste Malaysia, strives to provide a local platform on sustainable living in Malaysia. Together with some locals, we created zero waste map to promote and provide zero waste resources locally. Just took a permaculture design course in Bali which inspire me about community sustainable living. •Why/What does representation in environmental spaces mean to you Climate change is real. We all share one earth. It’s important to know that we can actually do something instead of looking for planet B. What’s more appropriate among all of the alternatives out there. Do things that value your life as well as caring for earth and the people. What really means to me is the appreciation of our mother nature for the new future generations to be really grateful about. •What do you want people to take from your IG Inspirations of living life to the fullest considering our future generations as well as environment. Being focus more on experiences and moments with people instead of material/stuff. #representationmatters #bipoc #woc #malaysia #zerowaste #minimalwaste #lowwaste #trashfree #plasticfree #unpackaged #bezero #ambassador #makelesstrash #makethezwswitch #circulareconomy

Representation Matters in Sustainability: @unwrapped_no_plastic_please 🇬🇭🇨🇭 Woman. Wife and Mother. Ghanaian & Swiss Heritage. Living in Zürich, Switzerland. Practice a love based life. Sustainability lifestyle blogger. Current low waster. Aspiring zero waster. Creator of (UN)WRAPPED. In the tradition of inspiring change towards a more sustainable and minimalistic oriented society, my blog aims to provide inspiring stories, simple solutions, and sustainable alternatives. The Ghanaian proverb says knowledge is a life long education and (UN)WRAPPED is a project quest to becoming more knowledgeable. For me, the environment space means daily habits and choices more in tune with what our earth needs from us in order to strive. By honoring the earth we were given we, in turn, ensure the blossoming of ourselves and generation to that are to inherit it. #representationmatters #woc #bipoc #melanin #blackexcellence #blackgirlmagic #blackwomen #ghanaian #swissgirl #zerowaste #lowwaste #sustainable #trashfree #plasticfree #bezero #makelesstrash #minimalwaste

Representation Matters in Sustainability: @juliantpowell 🌎 My name is Julian and I’m a personal stylist with a conscious touch. Growing up in Southern California, I was taught to never waste anything. I knew in my heart I couldn’t pursue any career in fashion living in ignorance. I like to believe that people are starting to realize that style and sustainability can coexist. The next obstacle I see is how consumers find it difficult to transition. That’s where I come in. My mission as a stylist is to make it easier for my clients to build a sustainable wardrobe. My blog High Wasted and my YouTube channel are my platforms to show how simple being eco-friendly can be. I encourage curiosity and to ask questions about the fashion industry. What I want people to take from my Instagram is that living more sustainably doesn’t happen overnight. It takes some shifts of mindset, mistakes are bound to happen but it’s a learning process. #representationmatters #woc #bipoc #sustainable #environmentalist #ecofeminist #ethicalfashion #sustainablefashion #fashionblogger #ecofashion #ecofashionblogger #wearnoevil #whomadeyourclothes #wearabetterstory #thetruecost #zerowaste #plasticfree #bezero #makelesstrash #makethezwswitch #lowwaste #trashfree #circulareconomy #cradletocradle #packagefree #blackwomen #blackgirlmagic #blackenvironmentalist #blackexcellence
