Per VPR: “The 60,000-square-foot store will be the retailer’s first in Vermont, and will mean they operate stores in all 50 states.”
However, not everyone is thrilled. After all, isn’t part of the charm of living in Vermont — and this part of New Hampshire, for that matter — is that we don’t have all the big chains?

BTW, this is a journalistic organization over here, so I did the math. Depending on where you live in the Upper Valley, the new Target … ahem, Tarjay … may not be all that much closer than current locations in Concord and Keene, and for many of us, it will be farther away. Per Google Maps:
- Valley News to Target planned for South Burlington: 1 hour, 23 minutes
- Valley News to Concord Target: 1 hour, 6 minutes
- Valley News to Keene Target: 1 hour, 9 minutes
Yes, I made a map.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this prompts a resurgence of questions about what’s moving on to Route 12A in West Leb. The answer: Starbucks and a dentist where Pizza Hut used to be, and Home Goods, PetSmart and two other vendors in the old Shaw’s.
