Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” is everywhere right
now: it’s been perched at the top of Amazon and New York Times
bestseller lists for months; the screen adaption, which debuts on Hulu
this week, is netting rave reviews; and, in a recent profile, The New

“The Handmaid’s Tale” follows the story of Offred, one of a class of
younger women kept as reproductive slaves. Moving between past and
present, the novel explores the circumstances of Offred’s captivity
and the cracks that begin to appear in the facade of the new order.
