Vermont is urging residents to put winter tires on their vehicles, recommending the measure as one that will help to avoid accidents, according to The Associated Press.

State Commissioner of Public Safety Tom Anderson said Tuesday in Colchester he had to learn “the hard way” that Vermont residents need winter tires.

The AP report goes on to say that Anderson and other state officials said “they would not endorse the idea of requiring winter tires through a legal mandate.”

It’s not that unusual a mandate — interestingly, our neighbors to the north, the Canadians, require all vehicles registered in the province of Quebec have snow tires. (The more you know.)
